South Africa is the world’s largest producer of macadamia nuts, accounting for around 26% of total global production. While the country holds the lions share of the global market, the local industry has been hard hit by massive price drops. Justin Hearne runs Danroc, one of the largest macadamia farms in the country, situated in the eastern province of Mpumalanga. A few years ago, in hopes of bridging the pricing gap, the farm made the move towards precision farming. Precision farming is a growing trend, led by industry body macadamias South Africa, or SAMAC with over 1000 local farmers now on board.
